PLAYBACK: CELLIST ANNA BOWMAN HURT

She’s been a huge part of some of our biggest projects in the last year or two! Take a minute to get to know Anna Bowman Hurt! We’re sure glad we do!

Performance Cred: What’s Your Story?

I attended CIM, studying with Merry Peckham for my undergraduate degree and with Sharon Robinson for my masters. I’m the founder and director of The Bowman School of Music, which offers private in-your-home lessons! I’m also on faculty at the College of Wooster, and teach Suzuki cello at The Music Settlement. I have performed in any and all kinds of venues, from The Happy Dog to Carnegie Hall. It’s the best!!

Long Term Creative Goals?

Performing music has always been my main goal and passion. But I’ve learned that, in addition to performing, teaching and helping others understand music in a more accessible way is vital to pass on what I love so much. That’s why I created the Bowman School of Music. A classical music school that teaches all ages and all skill levels in the student’s home.

Favorite Performance Memory?

I was fortunate enough to participate in the New York String Orchestra Seminar and performed in Carnegie Hall with amazing musicians a few years ago… And any time I’m able to perform with my piano trio, the Autana Trio- some of my fondest memories of true music making have been with them.

Favorite CLE Food?

Dewey’s, hands down. Best pizza and salads!

What You Do On A Day Off?

I’m VERY much a homebody! I love a day off, full of my favorite TV shows and spending time with my family.

Musical Inspiration? Yo-Yo Ma is the best example of making musical accessible. He’s able to create music in all sorts of genres, and take it to audiences all over the world.

Non-Musical Inspiration?

My mom! She’s always been able to see my potential in and out of music, and I’m forever grateful to her.

Favorite Classical Composer?

Shostakovich and I get along really well! Also, Beethoven. Both of them are able to connect with everyone in different ways, no matter their current situation. That’s pretty awesome…

Favorite Non-Classical Artist or Song?

It’s always been Ella Fitzgerald for as long as I can remember. I’ve loved her all my life and still am inspired by her every time I listen to her.
